Armijo came out strong against crosstown rivals.

Varsity: There was a strong show from both teams Tuesday, January 24, but Armijo came for the win. The Royals saw the first goal by senior captain Diego Torres with a chip into an open net. The Fairfield Falcons picked it up after that and held Armijo off and had several close calls of their own.

With eight minutes left, junior  Edwing Saucedo Pacheco was able to sink his first goal of the night. Then, six minutes later Saucedo followed through on a ball to finish his second goal and Armijo’s third for the night.

The Royals brought it in to talk about what was needed to do keep the pressure on and keep scoring, and came back into the second half and saw a great goal by senior Esteban Carcamo. Fairfield didn’t stop on their pressure and, with a injury mid play, they were able to race by Armijo and chip their own easy goal into the back of the net with about 19 minutes to go.

Overall there was some great play out there and a lot of players stepping up to different positions to support their team. Armijo starts the second round of play on Thursday, January 26, against Rodriguez High on their turf.

JV: The boys started off the game strong looking for opportunities and getting shots on goal. Newcomer Haroon Salarzai was able to get his first goal with a nice chip over the keeper.

The momentum continued and Artemio Perez was able to assist Salarzai for his second of the night. Armijo finished strong with a 2-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, Isaac Aguirre was able to finish smoothly pass the keeper to make it 3-0. Moments later, Fairfield was awarded a penalty kick and converted it to make it 3-1. Armijo turned things around quickly, Juan Uscanga was fouled inside the box and a PK was called. Salarzai scored his third goal from the PK spot to end the game 4-1.
