Originally, ancient civilizations used the stars and planets to predict seasonal changes and significant events.

People who follow the Zodiac know that there are twelve unique signs, and they can be laid out in a chart that is sometimes used to predict behavior or explain someone’s personality, and it is all based on the day and time of birth.

The ancient Greeks called the resulting chart zōdiakos kyklos (circle of animals), or ta zōdia (the little animals). The histories of the zodiac signs are unknown, but they seem to be from the middle ages in Greek manuscripts.

The current sign is Capricorn, from December 22 to January 19. It is in a Greek myth where someone jumped into the water and started changing into a goat-fish.

People born between January 20 and February 18 are under the sign is Aquarius. It is represented by someone pouring water.

One of the spring signs is Pisces, which is Latin for a fish. Those who celebrate their birthday from February 19 to March 20 fall under this sign, shown by two fish tied together. It is a sign related to the Greek myth of Aphrodite and Eros jumping into a river and the fish who saved them.

From March 21 to April 19, the sign is Aries, which is Latin for ram. The sign’s symbol is linked with an Egyptian god called Amon.

This is followed by Taurus and recognizes those born between April 20 and May 20. Its animal is a bull and it is related to the Greek myth of Zeus where he assumed a form of a bull to abduct Europa.

The next zodiac sign is Gemini for those whose birthdays fall between May 21 and June 21. They are represented by twins.

Those born later in the summer, between June 22 and July 22, fall under the sign of Cancer, represented by the crab. Cancer has ties to Greek mythology, in which a crab pinched Heracles while he was fighting the Lernaean Hydra.

From July 23 to August 22, people who claim the zodiac sign of Leo, portrayed as a lion, celebrate their birthdays. Leos are linked to the Nemean lion slayed by Hercules.

Virgos, those who are born between August 23 and September 22, are represented by a weeping maiden carrying a sheaf of wheat. The name is related to the word virgin.

Right about the same time that the calendar shows us it is fall, the zodiac chart introduces Libras, which in Latin means balance. Those people celebrate their birthdays between September 22 to October 23, and the sign represents Astraea, a Roman goddess of justice.

The next sign is Scorpio, which means scorpion. The days for this sign are from about October 24 to November 21 and the sign is related to a Greek myth where a scorpion caused the horses of the sun to bolt when they were being driven.

The calendar nears the end with Sagittarius, which is represented by an archer. Those who are Sagittarius celebrate their birthdays between November 22 and December 21, and the symbol can be either a man riding a horse or a centaur.
