Andre stays on his toes with Cross-Country.

Although Andre Smith has only been on the Armijo Cross-Country team for a year, he has been running regularly for three years.

He was inspired to join Cross-Country when he was in middle school. One day, his mother said, “You should join track,” and although he rejected the idea, his mother was persistent until he gave in. Now he takes part in a variety of workouts, which include hill repeats, cone chases, and tempo runs several days a week.

The long time goal he has for himself in Cross-Country is to improve and make State this year. Smith would encourage other people to join because “running is good for you, and the bonds people have on the team is great,” he said.

Smith gets along well with his teammates, and it is not just because they run together. He said that they just crack jokes all the time, and bring each other up when times are hard. With only seven members, the Boys’ Cross-Country team is noticeably smaller than other schools, but Smith said that it’s different because the people who are a part of it are the funniest and interesting people he has met.

Even outside of school, Smith enjoys running, but he also likes playing video games and watching TV. After high school, Smith is thinking about going to a college to study robotics, but he said, “Who knows? I could get into video editing or get a scholarship.”
