The competition was fierce, but the Royals were strong.

On Saturday, April 23, several Armijo track athletes competed at the Sacramento Meet of Champions at American River College. With a name like Meet of Champions you know the competition is fierce and only the best in the region can attend. The Royals had a total of six athletes able to enter the meet and many of them came away with not just great performances but wins in their events as well!

Individual results were from the open portion of the event:

~Lilian Luu (sophomore) ran the 800m and, although she didn’t set a new personal best, she proved that she belonged at these types of events running a 2:30.

~Jericho Johnson (sophomore) showed up late, just managing to check into his event before the final call and then won the shot put with a throw of 48 feet 5 inches.

~Egypt Hughes (senior) might be in her first season of track but she is destroying the competition. She took first place in the 100m with a time of 12.14s and then decided that wasn’t enough so she also took second place in the 200 with a time of 25.29s.

~Cierra Kinsey (junior, PSA) took second in the 100m, running a 12.24 and then followed it up by winning the 200m (yes we went 1-2 in both events) in 25.26.

Armijo’s girls’ 4x100m relay team was entered into the seeded portion of the meet, meaning they were one of the top nine times submitted into the meet. From one of the worst lanes, lane 1, it didn’t bode well for the Royals, but the team of Hughes, Kinsey, Sanai Wilson (junior), and Anisteicia Kinsey (sophomore, PSA) took 5th place with a new season best of 48.73. This places the Royals as the 7th best team in our section and if they can keep improving they will be looking to compete at the State meet in just under a month!
