Remember the challenges of puberty?

Turning Red had made its debut on Disney Plus on March 11. The movie focuses on a 13-year old girl named Meilin “Mei” Lee who wears what she wants, says what she wants, 24 / 7 / 365, but Mei has a hard time dealing with her strong  emotions.

Because of this weakness, between her social life and dealing with her mother being overprotective, Mei can’t help but turn into a big red panda. She doesn’t go through all of this alone, however. Mei has all her loving friends by her side who help her cope with her unusual situation. These friends all shared one dream: to attend a 4-Town concert.

Pixar’s new movie was set in the early 2000s and took place in Toronto, Ontario. What I love about this movie is the animation; it’s what really caught my attention. Add to that some quality songs that Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas wrote, especially Nobody Like U that plays throughout to fit the tones of the scenes.

The band 4-Town is based on boy bands that have been popular with young girls over the decades. It definitely got its influence from the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync. The makers of this film did an amazing job capturing it as realistic as possible.

A lot of people can relate to the cringiness of being a teenager going through puberty. It really brought back nostalgia to 90s-2000s babies, which includes most of us. We got a good amount of representation from this film, which makes me so happy.

I am going to rate this an 8/10 because Disney censored the hinted romance between Priya and the goth girl. They can do so much better with LGBTQ+ relationships. Overall Turning Red is one of the best heartwarming movies that Pixar has made.
