Badminton isn’t the sport that most people think of when they envision high school sports, but some of the greatest athletes on campus spend their time on the court in the spring. One of those athletes this year is Carisma Carrion. “I chose to join badminton because I wanted to try something new and have a chance to get to meet new people,” she said. “This is my first year playing badminton.”

While this is the first year with Coach Melissa Wilson leading the team, it is also Carrion’s first year at this particular sport. She has, however, participated in several others: volleyball, wrestling, and swimming.

She doesn’t plan to continue in college, but she will probably play this year and her senior year. Her college goals are focused on some time at Solano Community College before transferring to a four-year university.

“Being involved in sports carried my high school experience,” she said, but other things will mold her college experiences.

“My most memorable match was at Folsom High School because it was intense,” she said.

Carrion is the third of four children. She has two older brothers, Carlos (23) and Christian (22), and a younger sister, Carma (9).
