It all began with a mouse, they say.

50 years ago, the Happiest Place on Earth opened its gates, welcoming millions of guests over the years to a unique magical experience which would revolutionize the theme park industry forever.

When Walt Disney planned to replicate his beloved theme park, Disneyland, in Orlando, Florida,he never would have imagined the impact it would have on theme park tourism and his company. With Disneyland, Walt Disney had envisioned a park where children and adults alike would enjoy themselves. However, compared to the 450 acres Disneyland occupied, 28,000 acres were purchased for Walt Disney World to allow the company’s imagination to go wild (Walt Disney World History).

On October 1, 1971, after two years of construction, the Magic Kingdom opened its gates to guests from all around the world who were awed by Cinderella’s castle, Seven Seas Lagoon, classic attractions, and two unique hotels.

Similarly to Disneyland’s opening in 1955, Walt Disney World shook the world as visitors were amazed by the magic the company was able to achieve. Entrepreneurs also took notice of this cultural reset as new theme parks like Six Flags Great Adventure and Kings Island opened following the Magic Kingdoms opening (Walt Disney World opened 50 years ago today).

Now, after 50 years, Walt Disney World has grown to include four theme parks, two waterparks, a shopping and dining district, and more than 25 hotels. Its impact is evident as the Disney parks have expanded internationally to include locations in Japan, France, and Shanghai.

To recognize the significance Walt Disney World has made, the Orlando park is celebrating this grand anniversary through 2022 with special firework shows, new restaurants, and attractions (Walt Disney World opened 50 years ago today).
