Predictable, but enjoyable

DVD Review – Save the Last Dance

During the pandemic, many people spent hours watching movies that they might have missed earlier. Save the Last Dance, with Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas was first released in theaters in 2001, and a sequel was released in 2006.

Fussy New Yorker shared her opinion on the original movie at Amazon.com:

“This was a great movie. I wish it had been a bit less “typical” of stereotype, but nonetheless a really good movie.

“Sarah and Derek start as friends, but quickly move into interest in each other. They don’t get overly romantic other than 1 scene and it’s bland. Derek teaches Ballerina Sarah how to dance, but what I didn’t like was him teaching her how to act in a way that brought down her intellect. Dancing, fine. But, no need to force a white woman into black culture by teaching her to sit like a thug. However, it was not out of the realm of reality, considering many white people try to fit in with the black community and adopt their style and way of talking. So, while annoying, it was accurate. Sarah’s story was sad, but in the end, they both get what they want, and the producers don’t tie you to an outcome of what happens between them. Sarah goes to Julliard, and Derek is off to Georgetown after the movie ends.

“The movie had good acting, other than Derek’s ex-girlfriend who was straight cringe. I’ve watched this twice and would watch it again. I’ll give it 4 stars.”
