The Mariposa Grove, the largest Sequoia tree grove at Yosemite National Park, boasts some of the tallest giant sequoia trees in the world.

Before the grove became a part of the National Park, the “area was first visited by non-natives Milton Mann and Galen Clark in 1857. It was named after the county it’s located in, Mariposa.” (https://bit.ly/3jdjscj)

It wasn’t until President Abraham Lincoln declared Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove to be “a public trust” of California on June 30, 1864, that the land became protected. Twenty-six years later, in 1890, Yosemite was finally acknowledged as a national park. Despite popular belief, Yosemite was not America’s first or second National Park. It was the third—established 18 years after Yellowstone.
