Be there while California decides the future.

The Solano County Elections Department would like to coordinate with your staff to recruit student poll workers for the California Gubernatorial Recall Election on September 14.

Elections Code section 12302 states that an elections official may appoint not more than five students per precinct to serve under the direct supervision of precinct board members designated by the elections official. Any student may be appointed if they meet the following qualifications:

1) Is at least 16 years of age at the time of the election; and

2) Is a U.S. citizen, will be a U.S. Citizen at the time of the election, or is a legal permanent resident as defined by the Federal Immigration and Nationality Act; and

3) Is in good standing at any public or private secondary educational institution; and

4) Has a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Additionally, our office seeks poll workers who speak languages in addition to English, particularly Spanish and Tagalog.

The students will work from 6 a.m. to approximately 9 pm and will be paid a flat rate of $100. Additional stipends will be provided for training in the amount of $25 for online classes, and $20 for online lab classes. Students work alongside adult poll workers and share the same responsibilities. They receive the same training and pay and are at the polls the same amount of time.

Some schools have used the experience of working at the polls for extra credit, makeup for missed assignments, or community service/volunteer hours. Student poll workers have used their experience for school service requirements or college applications.

Interested students can contact the poll worker team at [email protected].
