So many choices to get the word out…

People have been using media for years as a means of communicating, but the last couple of decades, the newscaster has taken a back seat to the knowledge of a friend, while the postal carrier is no longer the bearer of information. That responsibility falls on family members.

According to National Today.com, people now spend about 144 minutes every day on social media, so it makes sense that there would be a World Social Media Day and that happens to be on June 30.

World Social Media Day was launched by Mashable on June 30, 2010,” according to National Today. “It was born as a way to recognize social media’s impact on global communication and to bring the world together to celebrate it.”

While social media may seem ubiquitous (look it up – you’ve got the dictionary in your hands), “the first social media platform ever to be launched was Sixdegrees in 1997. Founded by Andrew Weinreich, the website allowed users to list friends and family members and had features such as profiles, bulletin boards, and school affiliations. At its peak, Sixdegrees had over a million users but it was eventually shut down in 2001.” (National Today.com)

It was followed by Friendster, LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram, with a few attempts at world usage apps in between. You can send someone a message to celebrate World Social Media Day. What better way to say that you recognize it. Now, what might the next big app be that will get you texting?
