There’s more to food than just appearance.

World Food Safety Day on June 7 was created to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, and manage foodborne risks, according to Paho.org.

Governments, producers, and consumers are responsible for food safety. Everyone has a role to play in making sure the food we consume is healthy. The United Nations declared this day to draw global attention to health consequences of contaminated food and water.

FDA.gov suggests four easy steps to promote food safety at home:

  1. Clean (always wash your food, hands, counters and cooking tools)
  2. Separate (keep raw foods to themselves; germs can spread from one food to another)
  3. Cook (foods need to get hot and stay hot. Heat kills germs)
  4. Chill (put food in the fridge right away)
