While family picnics and gatherings might not be so safe right now, there are many alternatives listed in this story!

National Visit Your Relatives Day encourages people to get together on May 18. Even when we are not living in a pandemic, visiting family can be a challenge, but this day gives people a reason to make it happen. Family visits allow individuals to stay in touch, express emotions, make good memories, and share time together.
While the day provides great opportunities for face-to-face connections, that may not be possible due to distance or the challenges of COVID rules. People can still get in touch in a variety of ways, however.

  • Connect via Video Call
  • Send a care package
  • Record and share special events
  • Play games together on Zoom
  • Share photos through email
  • Consider sending a letter on paper

According to Days of the Year, digital technology has made it easier to stay in touch with our relatives. But who are these relatives? Parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins, nieces and nephews are considered your relatives. Biologically, if people come from the same family through blood or marriage, they are a relative.
The safety of our relatives and our own safety is a priority during these difficult times, but it is always worthwhile to stay connected to our relatives. This is a good day to connect with them and perhaps make it a habit to visit them more often in the future.
According to Nonstop Celebrations, National Visit Your Relatives Day was founded by a friend of the granddaughter of the founder of Chase’s Calendar of events. Perhaps it is thanks to her that your cousin or grandparents will receive a visit from you, if not on May 18, then on an upcoming weekend. Whenever it is, and whoever it is, take advantage of this National Day to make someone smile.
