Be healthy inside and out.

Millions of individuals in the United States suffer from a mental illness. As a means of raising consciousness about the problem, the month of May is dedicated to those who are dealing with mental health issues.

Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 and aims to raise public awareness about the struggles that Americans with mental health issues face, whether it is physical, emotional, or mental issues.

According to Wikipedia, 18.1% of Americans suffer from: depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Suicide is a sensitive issue which can be triggered by some of these mental disorders, another reason, why mental health should be taken seriously by the public.

Several organizations help spread awareness, one being Mental Health America, since 1949. Organizations like Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)  help fund research and help through financial grants, like their Community Mental Health Services Block Grant. This particular grant provides financial assistance to carry out state plans to reach out to those with serious mental health issues whether they’re adults or children.

Mental Health Awareness Month aims to improve the outlook for those who have been affected by any mental disorder or illness. We can all take this month to help improve the importance of people who suffer from any mental disorder. By doing so, we will also raise the public’s knowledge on the topic.
