May the force be with you

Star Wars Day – May 4

43 years ago, in a studio far, far away, Star Wars was released into theaters for the first time. It took the box office by storm, raking in over $775 million worldwide. It would then go on to release several more films and productions, each more popular than the last, slowly rising to the fame we see today.

Star Wars is a common name in almost any home. From the signature lightsaber fights to its monumental characters, Star Wars is celebrated worldwide

One day that is specifically celebrated for Star Wars fans is May 4. On this day, people might witness fans taking to the streets dressed up as characters from the cinematic universe. Stores often offer limited-time promotions as a part of Star Wars Day. It would certainly prove a challenge to escape the franchise on this day.

But why does May 4 of all days celebrate Star Wars? The movie itself wasn’t released until May 25 and yet it seems to be one of the biggest days of the series. Many Star Wars fans know that the day in fact comes from a quote in the movie. The Jedi, the portrayed heroes of this franchise, often quoted their powers to their mastery over the force, a magic that seems to give all Jedi powers and seemed to believe that this force lives in everything. So, when Jedi are sending people off or wishing them good luck, they will often say “May the Force be with you, always.” When people celebrate this day they might use the phrase “May the 4th be with you,” a parody of the iconic quote which is what brought this day to fruition.

How can you celebrate this day? If cosplaying isn’t your speed but you are still a fan, it might be of value to see what stores are offering for promotions. Action figures, comics, and even replicas all are offered sometimes for a discount, which could be a must-grab for any longtime Star Wars fan. In fact, LEGO is set to offer a new R2-D2 set (Geek Culture.com).

Disney, the company that currently owns the Star Wars franchise, offers many activities such as games or recipes on their website www.starwars.com. Celebrating Star Wars Day could even be as simple as snuggling up for a Star Wars movie (or a marathon), but above all else, May the 4th be with you always.
