Girls pair up to save the world

Netflix release – Thunder Force

The Netflix movie Thunder Force was released on April 9. The story takes place in Chicago where the citizens experience struggles in the aftermath of a 1983 cosmic ray blast. In turn it created people into these villains with superhero powers.  This brought together two childhood friends who team up to help defeat these villains.

Something I truly enjoyed is how the lead actors are women and they come together after being apart from each other for years to help defeat all the villains in their town.

The thing I didn’t like about it was that I felt as if they tried to include stuff and forced themselves to be funny. It’s scripted, yes, but there’s also a way that you can make it seem as if it’s naturally coming out.

My favorite characters are Lydia (played by Melissa McCarthy) and Emily (played by Octavia Spencer). They both gave me that warm feeling and have that cheerful smile, even if the movie isn’t as funny as I thought it would be. They still made up for it by playing their characters very well.

When Emily learns to get over her notions and accept Lydia for who she is, it allows her to let someone else do the heavy lifting instead of insisting she be independent. When the two had stopped being friends, Lydia didn’t believe that she was good enough for greatness, and she lived her life accordingly, but when she allowed herself to actually strive for greatness, well, she became the film’s real hero.

When I was reaching the end, of the show, I realized how different Lydia and Emily are but, despite this, they still put that to the side and focused on saving the town. I think it would be cool to one day go out and fight some villains to protect Fairfield and the residents.

The film left me with a message that we can come together as one with people who we’ve lost a bond with. You grow and you learn, and I think Lydia and Emily are a good example of this.

On a scale of 1-10, though, I would only give the show a 6. The message is good but I think if they could have scripted it better. Then it would have been amazing. Still, I’d recommend this to people who are into comedies and movies that involve girl power.
