National Yellow Bat Day – April 21

Sacrifice and secrecy saved lives.

Sacrifice and secrecy saved lives.

While there are a lot of National Days to honor animals, April 21’s National Yellow Bat Day actually honors history and the people who made it.

According to National Day Calendar, this day recognizes the creation of “the 265th Army Security Agency Company (Airborne) with the 101st Airborne Division was activated at Fort Campbell, Kentucky” in 1967. The Yellow Bat is their official insignia, representing secrecy.

Perhaps their biggest mission happened just a few months later, when they provided military intelligence for the 101st Airborne division about the planned actions of the Viet Cong during what would become known as the Tet Offensive.

The actions of the Yellow Bat agency prevented the local air base from being attacked and possibly destroyed.

It wasn’t until 2016 that this was announced as a National Day, but it was well deserved and can be celebrated by military buffs as well as other individuals interested in history as they learn more about the strategies and actions used during the Vietnam War.
