Run a food drive, give your time or collect funds – just volunteer and see what happens.

“The Value of One, the Power of Many” is the theme for National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 18 to 24.

Back in 1974, President Richard Nixon proclaimed that the third week in April would serve this purpose and there are a lot of ways that it can be celebrated.

Many local organizations require young volunteers to be at least 18, including the Animal Control Center, but it doesn’t mean that people younger cannot get involved. Instead, they can host fundraisers or create gifts that can be donated to those in need.

Are you interested in supporting a non-profit organization like Shelter Solano? Consider making Blessing Bags to donate. Ask people to donate snacks such as granola bars or packaged crackers and bottled water with an online sign up, and set up an assembly line to create packages for a local homeless shelter.

Maybe you want to raise money for Alpha Pregnancy Center. Why not hold a neighborhood yard sale? “Pick a central location in the neighborhood, such as the clubhouse, and ask neighborhood households to donate clothing and home items for a sale that will benefit a charitable organization” (Volunteer Ideas).

There are all different types of things you can do for this national holiday.
