Slip into a world of fantasy for National Princess Week on the last full week of April. This year it is celebrated from April 18 to 24.

Consider the Disney princesses as role models and take it from there. Which one do you relate to most? Is it Mulan or Cinderella? Jasmine or Rapunzel? For most princesses in literature, Disney included, the princess earns her title by marrying the prince, but before that, she proves her worth through strength of character.

Even in the modern world, princesses who are not born into the title must earn it by marrying a prince and accepting his name. Not all women who marry princes become princesses, but some choose to be strong by not accepting the rules of the title.

Once you’ve identified your princess ego, consider playing the part. Recording yourself online or throw a theme party and let your friends join in. Encourage little princesses to play the part and allow young princesses “to empower one another by using their voices to share the true meaning of being a modern-day princess” (Princess Strong).

Modern-day princesses include 5-year old Princess Charlotte, who is the great granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, or 9-year old Princess Estelle, Duchess of Östergötland.

There are many ways that National Princess Week can be shared to help girls live their dreams and believe that anything is possible. Take this week to remember your dreams of royalty and reach for the stars. After all, each princess has her own kind of story and what’s to say yours isn’t the next one?
