Get out and play with your dog. It’s a step in the right direction.

April is here! As we have toasted our years to good health, we dedicate April to our canine companions.

Dogs are naturally active animals, so it’s important to make sure they stay healthy throughout their lives. National Canine Fitness Month celebrates this opportunity.

Many pets in the modern world suffer from a sedentary lifestyle. As a result of this sedentary lifestyle, many dogs suffer from weight gain and other symptom that lead to things like cancer or weakness in the joints. Even if these factors may not sound serious, they can often cause discomfort and may overall shorten a dog’s life span.

It does not take much to prevent this, however. Keeping your dog moving daily will help with them keeping their weight down. You can often start small by having walks or specific meal times. You can also get creative with how you exercise your dog, trying to set up a course with obstacles your pet has to climb or crawl over in areas where they frequent, or adding exercises to things they are already familiar with, which will lead to it being easier to train the dog over time.

National Canine Fitness Month was originally founded by fitPAWS as a way to highlight obesity and sedentary lifestyles in dogs. Since 2017, they have dedicated this month to educating others on the importance of giving your pets healthy lifestyles. On their website, fitpawsusa.com they offer many more services to your pets, from training courses to toys, to tips on diets and proper exercise for your canine companion
