Women have been impacting history for eternity.

Every year, in the month of March we celebrate probably one of the most important national months of the year, Women´s History Month. But why do we study Women’s History in the first place?

Ever since 1995, presidents have celebrated the contributions women have made to the United States and recognized specific achievements they have made in American history.

National Women’s Month started out as only Women’s History Week, as the education task force of Sonoma County dedicated the celebration to the week of March 8 in 1978. (NWHM) But, the week was not official until President Jimmy Carter declared it in March, 1980. Over the next few years, the National Week became popular, which led up to Congress passing a Public Law declaring March as National Women’s History Month in 1987.

Women’s History Month holds a different theme each year, and this year the theme will be what was originally planned for 2020: Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced. This relates to the way women have historically been silenced by men in everyday situations including work, school and even just casually conversation.

But how can anybody honor this month through the current pandemic? Well there are multiple safe ways to honor Women’s History Month. Most likely, the simplest way is using social media to post about important women, past and present.

Another way of celebrating, if you’re willing to go outside or you can just DoorDash, is buying coffee or food for a woman you look up to or love. Surely they would appreciate the thought a lot (FOND).

Even though National Women’s History Month is officially in March, we should always celebrate and appreciate Women’s History and all that they’ve contributed. Make sure to make Women’s History a priority every day.
