First or last, you just have to finish the race.

The first Sunday in March recognizes the long years of training for those who achieve their goals of completing a race, whether it be a 5K, a marathon or an endurance run.

To honor those competitors, Finishers’ Medal Day was created and will be celebrated this year on March 7. It was originally started in 2018, thanks to the directors of the Little Rock Marathon in Arkansas (https://rb.gy/j5yzx3).

Most of the competitors in these races across the country are working people who train before or after work, all while caring for their families and other commitments. Many remain on a schedule despite rain, snow, and wind, earning that coveted award simply for completing their targeted race.

During the pandemic, many of the planned runs were done independently instead of in a group setting, and while people still got the swag, some were challenged by the change. Running is typically a lonely sport when it comes to practice, but those who finish a race are generally encouraged by the crowds that run with them and those that cheer from the sidelines.

Congratulate all of your friends and family who have earned a finishers’ medal, especially during a pandemic. And if you don’t have anyone to congratulate, consider becoming someone who can celebrate Finishers’ Medal Day.
