It’s views like this that make California a distinct destination for people around the world.

From beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hollywood sign, this grand state has a lot to celebrate on February 22. In honor of National California Day, take a chance to learn about the deep history of this Golden State.

Even though California officially became a state on September 9, 1850, the years before were filled with Spanish missionaries, the Mexican-American War, and a Gold Rush. All these factors led to California becoming the 31st state of the United States (National California Day).

“California, where spring comes in fall and the fall comes in the summer and the summer comes in the winter and the winter never comes at all” (Inez Haynes Irwin).

When most people imagine California, they think of bright sunny days going to the beach, even this quote from American author Inez Haynes Irwin supports that claim.

In reality, California is not all sunshine and rainbows it’s actually filled with a wide range of climates. From beaches to mountains, the activities in California can be up to you. Drive two hours from the state capital and you’re in Lake Tahoe, famous for their summer lake activities and snowboarding during the winter. Drive around five hours in another direction and you’ll make it to the Redwood National forest, perfect for any nature lover and hiker. Lastly, don’t forget Southern California with its beaches, cities, and pop culture scene.

California is so much more than its destinations and regions. It’s about the diverse people who make this Golden State so unique. It’s even said to be “the most diverse state in the nation,” according to ABC7 (California the most diverse state in the nation, study says).

This National California Day, be proud of the state you call home and all its fascinating people and places.
