When skies are grey, a splash of color can brighten the mood.

During the winter, everything changes, but after cold temperatures and gloomy days, for some people, it can get depressing. After the holidays, it is not unusual for people to suffer something referred to as “the wintertime blues.”
Why do people suffer through these doldrums? During the winter, the days are shorter and, even though they start being longer after the winter solstice, it takes a while before we are waking in daylight and seeing it well into the evening.

As humans, daylight gives us happy feelings. During the winter, the sun goes down around 5:00 pm and affects the amount of melatonin in our bloodstream. It actually causes us to feel both physically tired and sad. The weather changes, it gets cold, and wet, and we hibernate like bears almost all winter, especially during these hard times. There are many things that we can do to banish the winter blues. Surrounding ourselves with bright colors helps us to stay cheerful and brings cheer to others.

Bring out a bright red jacket or lace up some neon blue shoes. Accent your outfit with a colorful scarf or add a splash of color jewelry. You will feel better wearing all of these colors and the people around you will also be cheered. Don’t limit yourself to fashion to bring color into your life. Pick up or create some new paintings and bring bright colors to your room. Get candles in floral scents to bring spring into your environment. Play music that makes you feel happy. Do some cleaning; declutter your room, and or your whole house. Changing your surroundings overall is key. I hope this helps you with your winter blues.
