In today’s society, there is often a stigma associated with disabled people. Unfortunately, people around the world believe that those with disabilities are helpless, unable to care for themselves, or unable to make their own decisions. It is often assumed that a person with a speech impairment may have additional disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities.
Obviously, that is untrue through the many inspiring stories about people who have overcome their personal struggles and challenges to achieve their goals and dreams. However, people with disabilities still receive discrimination, such as being denied jobs, housing, or opportunities that come from negative stereotypes.
While there are laws in place to prevent this, such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which protects qualified individuals from discrimination based on their disability, it is often not enough to completely stop the practice.
Despite what society believes, there have been many people with disabilities who prove society is wrong. A famous Italian opera singer, Andrea Bocelli, followed his dreams instead of being held back by his disability. His inspiring story is shared among the world, shining a new light on those with disabilities that typically goes unnoticed.
It is important to be able to see more than just someone’s disabilities and treat all people as equals. Those with physical, mental or emotional challenges shouldn’t have to face discrimination for something that is not in their control.
