Canvas is a short 9-minute animated film on Netflix released December 11.

When Armijo graduate Frank Abney III recognized that his other Pixar contributions did not have the representation of the African-American community that made up his world, he decided to do something about it, according to http://tiny.cc/TheDR. That is how Canvas was born.

Abney approached this project with experience as he has helped develop many heartfelt movies such as Toy Story 4, Coco, and Incredibles 2. This movie has no talking, but it has amazing music by Jermaine Stegall to set the mood.

The story is about hope, loss and the power of family. It’s about a grandfather who is still trying to get over a heartbreaking loss of his wife while struggling to reclaim his passion for painting.

He eventually finds his inspiration with the help of his daughter and granddaughter who are just as artistic as he is.

This movie gives us a glimpse of what Abney and his family went through after losing his own father at the young age of five years old. Abney took 6 years to create his passion project, centered around a grieving moment. It’s relatable to many people across the world who’ve dealt with depression or trouble finding inspiration, hope, or interest after tragic events or heartbreaking moments.

The movie has a review score of 6.5/10. I personally enjoyed the movie a whole lot; it’s very relatable and tea- jerking. I would rate it a 9/10. I highly suggest!
