There’s a lot to celebrate in December, but perhaps one of the most important events of the month is that it is National Human Rights Month.

In 1948, the United Nations developed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and it is on that document that National Human Rights Month is based. The goal is to provide encouragement for everyone in the United States to come together and stand up for equality, justice, and the dignity of all humans. National Human Rights Month is actually one of many ways that Human Rights are acknowledged during the month of December. All of them are designed to encourage people, no matter race, gender, age, or any other identifiers, to come together and speak about equality and justice for all humans.

Celebrate rights for all humans this December by sharing #NationalHumanRights and #HumanRights on social media. Learn more about the struggles that have gone into developing human rights and the countries that continue to struggle to create equality. Talk to someone in your class who comes from a different culture and learn more about their experience and what rights they are most appreciative of, and then share your response with that person. You’ll both benefit.
