Halloween can be a babysitting nightmare!

Netflix review

This month Netflix released a spooky kids comedy called A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting. It stars Tamara Smart as Kelly Ferguson, a bullied high school freshman who finds herself stuck babysitting on Halloween night. This film is based on Joe Ballarini’s fantasy fiction book series also titled A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting.

While Kelly is babysitting Jacob, monsters come out from under his bed and kidnap him. Liz (Oona Laurence) shows up and explains that she is the leader of a super-secret society of monster-hunting babysitters and she and Kelly begin their journey to save Jacob.

The monsters are just the minions of the true villain, The Grand Guignol (Tom Felton, also known as Draco Malfoy), who uses children’s nightmares as his fuel. Kelly joins the team of babysitters: Cassie, the brains; Curtis, the potion master; Berna, the muscle; and Liz. The alumni are quite interesting and include Rosa Park, Frida Kahlo, Merlin, Artemis, and Cleo Patra.

This film was full of great quotes, but my personal favorite is “Now I am only scared of real things, like climate change and inequality and talking to boys. And everything I read on Twitter. It’s like really scary.”

I loved how this film was shot and the diversity of the cast and would definitely recommend watching with your family this Halloween season.
