Save the cats and spread awareness!

Global Cat Day, originally known as National Feral Cat Day, is October 16. It was created to raise awareness about cats because they are the most likely shelter animal to be put to death. This day was created by Alley Cat Allies, an organization that has worked for over 30 years helping out cats from animal shelters, improving shelters, and changing the law for these animals.

Global Cat Day and its predecessor was developed in 2001 to help out all of the cats in need of a better home and environment when over 100,000 people signed a petition to stop killing cats and to donate money. Today, more than 650,000 people have helped out.

You can observe and/or help out by volunteer to support the program, help protect and control the cat population, share the information about these programs, and to learn more about the Trap & Release (TNR) programs where ferals are caught, neutered or spayed and released back into the environment, preventing them from creating more animals that might end up in shelters.

If you are a cat person, Global Cat Day is not the only day you can celebrate our feline friends in October. You might also want to check out information about National Black Cat Day on October 27 and National Cat Day on October 29. Just click on the links to know more.
