Dogs deserve the best, and responsible owners provide that.

Every responsible dog owner has his day, and September 19 just happens to be that day.

Responsible Dog Ownership Day reminds us that the importance of taking care of pets.

Good dog owners should take their dog to the vet regularly to make sure that he or she is okay. There are many stray dogs in the world today that need a home, so spaying or neutering a dog helps keep the population more steady.  For some dogs, it is also important to brush their teeth somewhat regularly.

Another important part of being a dog owner is getting the dog out for exercise. For some dogs, about 30 minutes a day is enough, but other dogs, especially puppies, need more exercise, sometimes an hour or more twice a day.

Dog training is an important task of being a responsible owner. While it is not necessary to visit a professional for some of the simpler tricks, like sit and stay, it is often easier. A well-trained dog is easier to care for.

Responsible dog owners also provide for their dogs, which includes vet visits, food, treats, toys and other supplies.

Some owners know how important it is to have their dog socialized, but not all dogs are the type to spend time at a dog park. 23-year old Monica owns both a 1-year old German Shepherd (Max) and a 3-year old German Shepherd (Zeus). “I think it’s important to [socialize my dog],” she said. “I wouldn’t want Max to grow up aggressive towards other dogs.” This is a trait that responsible dog owners recognize and address appropriately.

While many dogs tend to beg for human food, it is often unhealthy. Responsible dog owners consider the value of the scraps and decide on healthy treats for their pets. “I only give Zeus dog food and some protein his vet gives to me to put inside of his food,” Monica said. That sort of behavior keeps dogs at a balanced weight.

“I try to do everything that is possible to raise them in a healthy environment with other dogs, family and myself,” said Monica. “They are my number one priority.”
