If you only celebrate National One Hit Wonder Day once, that’s okay. The people that we are celebrating really only made a name for themselves once, but it was memorable.

National One Hit Wonder Day, celebrated on September 25. This day dedicates itself to singers who give us one popular song, and disappear from the media forever.

This day was created by music journalist Steve Rosen in the 1990s, according to http://www.daysoftheyear.com, to appreciate these many songs and artists. It’s crazy how much these songs can impact people and casually make the listener remember the lyrics without even knowing why. Cups by Anna Kendrick, for instance, had everyone learning how to do the cup choreo she does by its easy and catchy rhythm.

867-5309 / Jenny, a 1981 hit  by Tommy Tutone, got everyone calling the number that was sung by the band and remembering it years later. Only two of their other songs, however, even made the top 100, and neither of those broke into the top 25.

One hit wonders create a unity within people. They’re songs played at parties, festivals, and basically everywhere you go, songs that everyone knows but never really earned the singer additional fame.

I remember going to a silent disco and singing with strangers to Geronimo by Sheppard. None of us knew each other, but that song was able to make a group of strangers become so comfortable with each other. That song won several awards in Australia, the band’s home country, but they haven’t been heard from much since.

Although one hit wonders only last for a short period of time, their legacy lives on forever. Which do you remember?
