Unlike a text or email, a letter is a lasting legacy.

Writing letters is a lovely way to communicate to someone, especially during these hard times. You could personalize a letter for that special person with drawings and mementos, or it might just be with just your writing. It could be that simple. All you need is a pen, a piece of paper and an envelope. Of course, if you are sending it through the post office rather than dropping it off, you would also need a stamp.

World Letter Writing Day was founded by Richard Simpkin on September, 1, 2014. He urges kids and adults to take time off social media and write a physical letter. To promote his idea, Simpkin would visit schools to give letter writing workshops.  “I became interested in letters in the late 1990’s when I started a project called “Australian Legends,” said Simpkin, whose story can be found on Facebook at World Letter Writing Day. “We are more expressive when we write a letter compared to an email or text where we just want to take shortcuts. We try not to make spelling mistakes when we write. We usually take pride in our handwriting and we all want our letters to look and sometimes feel special to the receiver: a hint of perfume, a photo, a favorite flower petal.”

If you aren’t sure who to write, you have lots of options. It could be a letter to your future self, your next door neighbor, a special friend, or even one of your family members. It’s all completely up to you.

It’s good to write once in a while and to take a mental health day. “Handwriting is your DNA, It’s your fingerprint that only you can share with others. Pick up a pen or pencil & write a letter today!”  Be sure to check out Richard Simpkin’s website for more information about World Letter Writing Day and share a communication with someone that will last.
