A story about growing up that grows on you.

Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens, tells the story of Kya Clarke, who looks at the present and how her past contributed to her life. Kya lives on the outskirts of town near a marsh and is looked down upon by many people because she is underprivileged. When she was young, her mother walked away and never looked back. Her older siblings left Kya alone with her abusive and neglectful alcoholic father.

Throughout the course of the story, she learned to grocery shop, cook, and clean so she can take care of herself, although she continue to feel sadness when she considered her mother’s departure, and left wondered if she would ever come back. As Kya gets older, two young men enter her life. One of them is her brothers bestfriend, Tate, who teaches her how to read and helps her find happiness again. Another boy, Chase Andrews, makes her feel like a woman but refuses to acknowledge their relationship. In 1969, Chase, a local football legend is found dead in the marsh.

Rumors went around the town of who had the motive to murder him. When the Crawdads Sing is a story full of twists and turns that successfully leave you with many questions as to who killed Chase. Overall, the book was slow and didn’t really get to the point until about halfway in. This book was not something I was personally interested in because I don’t generally like mystery or historical fiction novels. However, if you enjoy either of those genres, or both, I would recommend checking this book out for the big plot twists.
