Stefanie Owens chose to run for president of The Class of 2020 because she “wanted to make a difference within our class, big or small. Just to switch things up,” she said. “Being Class President is kind of stressful. Right now we don’t have much going on because there are no events, but it can be a lot sometimes, especially during Homecoming, but it’s really fun to do.” Her favorite event as a senior was the Senior Sunrise. While there are plans to return to school on May 4, it is unclear whether or not there will be an opportunity to host a Senior Sunset in June.

Becoming Senior Class President was fairly easy. Elections were held in the spring and there wasn’t a lot of competition. “I’ve already been in leadership so I had some support from my classmates,” she said.

Owens’ favorite part of being in charge of her class was growing a relationship between other students because “I know people in my class but I don’t necessarily interact with them as often as I would as president,” she said. Still, it is difficult because class officers have a lot of responsibilities and managing leadership and class office with school and sports can be a challenge.

Despite the challenge, Owens would encourage other students to consider joining Leadership and running for office. “Go for it,” she said. “Don’t be scared because, either way, whether it be good or bad, you grow from the situation and become a better leader just in general and you get to meet a lot of new people.”

In the fall, Owens hopes to be a freshman at a four-year university, on her way to becoming a nurse.
