Emily Dickinson is considered one of America’s greatest poets. She is famous for highly emotional and philosophical short poetry.

Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830. She was an outgoing girl and she excelled in school. However, in her twenties, she became reclusive and began to hide in her room at her father’s house for days at a time. Inside of that room she wrote many poems about life and death, self-identity, nature, religion, and other important things that interested her.

At the time, no one really appreciated her poetry. None of her friends or family encouraged her to write poetry, she only did it because she enjoyed it. There are rumors about some of the recipients of those poems, suggested lovers and others she admired. It wasn’t until Emily Dickinson’s death that she became infamous for her poetry, but now she is an important figure that we often study in English class.

Kai Luna is very interested in poetry and feels that Dickinson deserves more recognition. “I know that when I write poems for English class, I get really inspired by Emily Dickinson so I think we should talk about her more because she could inspire other people with her poetry.”

“I agree with Kai,” said Cristal Mejia. “Poetry is a really nice way to show your emotions and I love learning about Emily Dickinson when we study poetry, but I don’t think we get to hear enough about her.”

Nonetheless, Dickinson is definitely an important figure that serves as an inspiration for many people.
