The piano was only the beginning for Janessa.

Janessa Voyce is an accomplished musician at Armijo High School. “I’ve been playing instruments since I was in fourth grade, so for about seven years now,” she said. “I became interested in joining band because my mom and brother played when they were in school…I first learned how to play the piano.” She now also plays clarinet and mallets, which is like a big xylophone.
“A difficult thing I had to learn to do was reading music because piano has both treble and bass notes,” Voyce said. “Also, I had to learn to sound good while playing my clarinet…Music expresses what words cannot say.”

Voyce lives near Vanden High School but she wanted to go to Armijo High School because she feels that the Armijo band is better. “One thing I dislike about being in band is that it’s only in high school and it’s not life. People don’t take band seriously and they don’t care, that brings the people down,” she said.

“If I weren’t playing instruments, I’d probably be doing nothing,” she said. “I’d be school forward. If I could be in a sport, it would be swimming because I like to swim…If Armijo had culinary class, I’d take that.”

Outside of school, Voyce likes to play video games when she has extra time. Voyce’s favorite musician would be Aivi Tran, a pianist.
