The Armijo High School cafeteria was packed the night of Friday, November 8 as lots of students sang karaoke for an eager audience.
The people on stage engaged the audience as did the audience with the people on stage. Everyone was supportive of the performers, whether they were aiming for the stars or just sharing their passion. When a singer hit one of those high notes, the audience would go wild. For those too nervous and likely to forget the words to the song they had chosen, there was a big TV screen playing a follow along. Between singers, the announcers came out and cracked jokes before introducing the next singer. It really broke the ice and tension, if there was any, in the room.
After the performance, each participant received get a goody bag, filled with candies, and a Polaroid in a booth that the leadership students had set up. The cafeteria was set up to reflect a comfy space. The people in the front had blankets and were all snuggled up ready to hear some amazing singers show off their talent. Behind them was a row of seats, where all the hyper kids could sit. Concessions were in the back, including nachos and cold drinks.
Overall, the environment was a very safe space. It felt as if there was no pressure; everyone was there just to have a good time.
