Meals, hospice care, tutoring and picking fruit are all opportunities to serve.

Thanksgiving is a great time to give back by taking part in community service events with friends and family. Throughout the year local community organizations need volunteers to help out. Volunteering is a great way to spend Thanksgiving break.

With so many events, it can get overwhelming to find the best one, but there are sites to help. Potential volunteers can see multiple community service events on a calendar with the time, requirements, and spots available. It’s simple to see which date and event is the best fit. The website holds lots of different events such as food preparations, habitat restoration, and garden work.

Here are some of the activities mentioned on http://www.HandsOnBayArea.com.

On November 24 in San Francisco, the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality will hold a food preparation and serving event towards the homeless. Ages 14-15 with and adult or 16+ without an adult. Orientation required.

On November 25 in San Francisco, the St. Andrew’s Dining Room will hold a food preparation and serving event toward low income areas in the community. Ages 13-14 with an adult, 15+ without an adult. Orientation required.

On November 28 in San Francisco, Downtown Senior Center will hold a food preparation and serving event towards seniors, people with disabilities, and homeless. Ages 15+ with an adult.

Another website, www.volunteermatch.com, offers closer opportunities, including volunteering as a tutor with The Leaven (2220 Boynton Ave. Suite A, Fairfield), working in a hospice office (2480 Hillborn Rd. Suite 105, Fairfield,)

Do you prefer to work outside with your friends? You might want to check out this opportunity in Vacaville on November 30 to pick citrus fruit for the needy with Urban Farmers. “Signups at Eventbrite will be mandatory for anyone participating, to ensure the event is covered under their liability insurance,” said Mr. John Tusting, who has organized the event.  There is no cost for a ticket to this event. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vacaville-area-community-harvest-tickets-77762831723
