Guiding children whose parents can’t

Mariah Walker sets an example for others by volunteering at Project Avary. According to the organization’s website, ProjectAvary.com, “Project Avary offers long-term support, resources, guidance and training for children with incarcerated parents.”

Walker has been volunteering with the organization since she was 7 years old and still enjoys volunteering a lot. Her job there is to work with kids who deal with the absence of a parent or direct family member who is in prison. “My mom made me volunteer but as time went on, I started to bond with the kids so now I just do it for them,” said Walker.

She sets a good example for other people and the kids there so that they can get the help they need. One important part of her position
with the organization is making sure that the kids can trust her.

“I really do recommend volunteering because it can get fun and it makes you feel good,” Walker said.
