Teacher Feature: Una buena maestra

Ms. Georgia Cerda has been teaching at Armijo High School for 14 years. She knew that she wanted to become a teacher as soon as she realized that she loved working with and helping children, especially teenagers. She decided to become a Spanish teacher because, even though it is not a language that she grew up speaking, she has always been very interested in the Spanish language.

Ms. Cerda took an interest in the language because she knew it would be a skill that she could use for her entire life, and it would also help when she was travelling, which is something she likes to do as much as she can. Speaking Spanish was also a good skill for Ms. Cerda because she ended up marrying a man who happens to be Mexican. Being able to communicate with his family is very important to her.

To accomplish this goal, Ms. Cerda took Spanish classes throughout high school and college, and became completely fluent while she was in her late 30’s. After studying at a total of six different colleges, even a college in Spain, Ms. Cerda finally got her teaching degree and came to work at Armijo High School.

She has always lived in the United States, being born in Utah and living in California since she was a year old, but to expand on her travelling and her knowledge of the Spanish language, she spent a few years living and studying in Mexico and Spain. She has travelled to Mexico almost forty times now, and has also taken a vacation in Paraguay.
