On February 8, I was part of a selective group of students within the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) to be recognized for the 2019 Good Character Youth Award. The award was given to 24 students who were nominated for passing what was called the “Four Way Test” that all Rotary organizations abide by.

While each student was recognized for having good character in different ways, I was recognized for representing good character towards peers who were dealing with mental difficulties. The committee said, “Elijah is being recognized for ‘Will it be beneficial to all concerned?’ by helping peers with difficulties.” They also explained that each of the winners was recognized for having good character and being good students naturally. I was one out of two recipients from Armijo, while the event had students from Fairfield High, PSA, and Rodriguez High.

Through the event, I was able to meet with the mayors of Suisun City and Fairfield, along with the Senator of District 3, Bill Dodd. We briefly conversed, introducing each other and he asked me what I would like to do in the future. Along with the mayors and Mr. Dodd, part of the John Garamendi committee and numerous Rotarians were present.

Prior to the awards ceremony, families and recipients were served food and were introduced to many of these Rotarians. Overall, the event was definitely one to remember, from meeting Mr. Dodd, to shaking hands with numerous professionals on the awards stage, to being recognized through many certificates.
