All in a Name: Armijo’s Own Triple Axel

It’s wintertime and people are eagerly taking to the snow and ice for sports. The competition is tough and when someone hears that a skater has accomplished a Triple Axel, it is clearly a measure of athleticism and strength. This year, it might be said that Armijo has completed a Triple Axel.

There are three boys on campus who share the first name of Axel, but two of them are planning on moving on in June.

Axel Diaz knows the other two Armijo students named Axel. He is also aware of one other famous Axel – Axel Witsel, a Belgium player who plays for the German club Borussia Dortmund. “I don’t know why my parents chose the name Axel,” he said. “They just liked the name, I guess.” When he introduces himself to people, they sometimes remind him that his name is a car part.

Diaz is not the only member of his family that attends Armijo. His cousins Ashley and Carlos Ruiz are also hanging around campus. While they’ll be here a while longer, Diaz plans to go to Napa Valley College in the fall, maybe filling his time with classes and a temporary job at a place like Panda Express.

Axel Lara-Zamora is also a senior and plans to go to a trade school after graduation, with the hopes of becoming an electrician.

Lara-Zamora has met another person who shares his name, a brother of his friend. He also has met both of the other Armijo Axels and, when people hear his name, they sometimes say that it sounds like a bad word or a guy in a band. It actually is the name of a guy in a band, Axel Rose from Guns and Roses. Lara-Zamora said that he wouldn’t consider changing his first name, but thought he might be interested in being named Axel Trejo.

Like Diaz, Lara-Zamora has family at Armijo. His brother Brandon is a member of the Class of 2022.

The third component of the Triple Axel is junior Axel Tabares. He came to Armijo from Grange Middle School and is currently enrolled it the standard set of classes. He also is enrolled in Woodshop. He was unavailable for comment.
