Caitlyn is proud to be an Armijo Indian while representing PSA.

Caitlyn Urena, a Public Safety Academy (PSA) student, is also an avid softball player. Although her team is not currently in season, pre-season conditioning is in full swing. With the season starting soon, Urena pitches, catches, and plays third base. She has been playing for nine years and it is the only sport to which she has been dedicated.

This year Urena plans to start the season with Armijo’s team, since PSA does not have sports teams. She said that she plays softball because it helps her calm down and she believes that, if she plays throughout high school, she’ll have a better chance of getting a scholarship to college. In spite of her love of the sport, she said that she does not see a serious future in softball but rather, as a hobby.

Urena started being interested in softball through her sister. She used to watch her sister play and that encouraged her to do the same. “I used to want to do basically everything she did, so I started playing and it just stuck with me,” she said. She enjoys the sport because of the teamwork and she sees how it’s all team effort saying, “You can’t just rely on one person and you have to work with other people.”
