Athlete focus: High school was the First Step

You can almost hear the booming announcement over the loudspeaker. “Armijo’s Defensive Player of the Year: Isaiah Verrett!” But this sort of announcement isn’t so unusual for the Armijo senior who also played for the Fairfield Expos last summer. He was also Rookie of the Year in his freshman year.

Everyone in his family plays baseball so it was a natural choice for Verrett. He has enjoyed playing for Armijo these last four years and intends to continue playing in college. “I will either go to Holy Names University or Solano,” he said. “I’m going to major in Sports Management or Criminology.”

Verrett is the youngest of three brothers. While he admires both Pedro (29) and Jon (21), he did say that his mother is his role model. He is glad that he’s had the chance to play baseball over the years and would suggest that other students “get involved early so that you can be able to compete when it comes to higher levels. If you start playing young, you have more time to become better.”

Although he is leaving in June, he does think that there are ways that Armijo could be a better place for those who follow him. “If I could change one thing about Armijo, I would change the school food and snacks they have to offer,” he said. “Also, I’d like vending machines.”
