Anika Patel- The Linus Project

Project Linus is a non-profit organization that makes knitted and crocheted blankets and assembles care-packages for foster children and other disadvantaged children in the local community. “Linus is a reference to the character “Linus” from Charlie Brown due to the fact that he’s always carrying around a blanket. They are a various-needs-based organization who donates to a number of cause. The blankets they make are delivered by the president of their chapter.

For their CAS project, Anika Patel and a few other people are contributing to this organization and their main focus is the local kids in solano county. Anika plans to keep contributing to the cause until she graduates high school.

Regarding her feelings towards the cause, Anika had this to say “ I love how I can use a craft I love to help others, and there’s no reason for me to stop.”

Anika found out about this organization online back in January 2016. She was looking for a great way to crochet for the community and she found it. Currently, their focus is on children’s hats because it is easy to learn how to crochet hats. Also, the size of baby’s and children’s heads are small so it doesn’t take too much time to make. Another reason for making hats, and not something else like blankets or stuffed animals, is that hats are often a baby’s first memento.

Anika had this to say about volunteering for the cause “By donating to WIC, we want to impact a mother and child’s life at its start and show that we care.”

Inspired by this organization, Anika started a club called “Stichers”. She is the president, the vice president is Semhar Teklu, and the secretary is Samantha Stanley. They work together to share their love for crochet to others by teaching people how to crochet. I personally am part of the club and so far they taught me how to make a baby’s hat. You can go in and learn the basics and then make whatever your heart desires, it is not limited to just hats. The club meets every Friday after schools in D-7
